WHY NOT CREATE A GLAMOR BEDROOM?

Rent a bunch of 1940’s movies, with stars like Fred Astaire, and you’ll get a glimpse of boudoirs that were meant to stun and enthrall the audience with unadulterated luxury.

Movie bedrooms would be large enough for a sitting area with perhaps a pair of slipper chairs, which are club chairs without arms, covered in a champagne or pearly gray satin.  A round table in between would hold a martini shaker and glasses on a silver tray.

Headboards were often tufted silk or velvet, and the bed covering might be an ivory satin, flanked by sleek lacquered end tables, topped with mercury glass based lamps.  Vanities were a staple, and would be made of mirrored tiles, or draped with flowing, gossamer fabric.

Lighting was dramatic.  Spotlights were used to highlight sepia toned prints framed with silver, and other focal areas, but it could be controlled to create a romantic, or a bright airy mood.  Colors were subtle, rich, and timeless.

Window treatments were billows of rich sheers and silks, but not heavy looking like mansion draperies.  In fact the whole dreamy, ethereal mood of these movie sets was mostly about sumptuous fabric that shimmered under proper lighting, with a dash of metal and mirror to reflect it even more.

So when the lady wearing the chiffon nightgown covered with a fox trimmed robe, and her silk, smoking jacketed husband entered the room, they fit right into the surroundings.  There were no concerns about spot cleaning the martini spills on the satin chairs.  It was all about feeling good and living high.

That luxury is being recreated today at high budget levels, but can also be accomplished with modest means.  Since mood and fabric are the main drivers of glamour bedrooms, you may still opt for chairs, bed coverings, and windows dripping in silk, and tufted headboards of velvet.

But because of great advances in fabrication, we can substitute ultrasuede or chenille for velvet, and a wide range of poly silks that look just as alluring as the real thing.

Quilted poly silk bedding, with a few dupioni silk pillows added in, can be easily obtained in Erie at great prices.  If you are crafty, you could create a padded, tufted headboard for drama.

Mirrored tables are available, shiny lamps are everywhere, paint colors are sophisticated, and even mercury glass is available again.  Round mirrors with oversized, brushed silver or bronze frames fit the motif, and halogen spotlights mounted in the ceiling can be directed at the abundant selection of subtle, contemporary art.

You want a quiet, come hither feel to the room, so keep the color scheme softened with low, or monochromatic contrast in the color choices.  A mix of grays, beiges, cocoas, and creams, with maybe a touch of pale pink, would be smashing.

Don’t forget the slipper chairs covered in ultrasuede, and an ottoman to share, the fur trimmed, faux of course, robe, and an appreciative soul mate.
