YOUR HOME REFLECTS YOUR
STYLE AND PERSONALITY
Many of us question how to assemble an overall theme or style for our
homes. The best furnishings can appear poorly chosen, and the humblest
cottage can be loaded with personality. Having a unified look that
reflects your personality takes thought and planning. Let’s explore some
ideas that will guide you toward interiors that are a positive extension
of your interests.
Every selection you make reflects your personality on some level, but
the choices may not add up to a look that pleases you. Mortgage payments
often usurp furnishing and accessory buying power for young families,
and those of us in homes for many years are often victims of mass
accumulation that doesn’t offer a unified idea.
But where do people begin to set the tone for how they wish their homes
to be perceived? Why not follow the natural progression from the
wardrobe choices you make, to the choices you make for your home
interiors?
Are you perceptive when choosing good lines that compliment your figure?
That could translate to well tailored sofas and chairs with fitted
upholstery done in neutral colors. If you’re big on scarves and jewelry,
then you’ll be drawn to room accessories that add sparkle and interest.
If you like feathered boas, spike heels, and chandelier earrings, your
home should feature some zany, whimsical touches that delight visitors.
The Eddie Bauer dressers would, and should, stay with timeless furniture
selections and maybe monochromatic colors.
If your clothes are a mixture of button down traditional and trendy, and
this truly represents who you are, then you would probably be drawn to a
transitional, which means blending contemporary with traditional, living
and family rooms, but also bedrooms, bathrooms, or entries done in
trendy color choices, maybe metallics, and the latest accessories.
Although not a hot topic anymore, we were recently consumed with whether
our skin tones were winter, thereby complimented with strong, vivid
color, or autumn, which demanded russet earth tones, etc. These
principles are valid, as any winter knows who tries to wear a rust
colored sweater. People are more drawn to colors that they wear well, so
it makes sense to make similar selections in their surroundings. So
winters would choose strong, vivid, clear colors, and autumns would
choose subtler, more mixed tones.
If you are unsure what style of clothing suits you best, make a
concerted effort to start here. Try on every outfit and find the common
thread in those in which you look and feel good. Ask a friend or mate if
they concur. Maybe you feel best in eveningwear, or maybe a velour
jogging suit. Most of us feel good in both, but one look, whether formal
or informal, will please us more. If you love both, you have more
decorating options.
We want to transport the look and feel of our best outfits to the look
and feel of our interiors. If you are consistent, a style that is you
will emerge.
