HELP WITH UPHOLSTERY SELECTION
Upholstery fabric choices are extensive,
so whether you are buying a new sofa and chair, or recovering what you
have, here are some ideas to keep in mind.
When faced with mounds of fabric swatches, remember that whatever the
grading system the company uses, the cost increments depend on the
weave, fiber content and construction of the fabric. These factors
relate to the cost of manufacturing the fabric, so as the grade goes
from “A” to “F” for example, the price rises accordingly. This does not
always indicate the quality or durability of the fabric, just the cost
of producing it. So the less expensive grade may be a wise choice and a
money saver.
Choosing the correct fabric depends largely on how it will be used, and
by how many people and pets. All us want fabric that will wear well,
feel good, be easy to clean, resist fading and pilling, and be
reasonably priced. And we want to love it.
Every fabric has specific directions for removing spots, and whether to
use water based or solvent cleaners. Water based cleaning is usually
more forgiving. Remember also that any fabric placed in direct sunlight
will fade over time, but some, like untreated cotton, fade more quickly
than others.
If your home has lots of traffic, and it includes pets, then one of the
best choices is microfiber. Made of polyester fibers, it has excellent
durability, a wide choice of colors, and is easy to clean. Having a
suede-like surface, it has a soft, velvety feel. Kitty won’t catch her
claws on it, but will leave her hair attached to it. Choose light colors
that match kitty’s hair.
Chenille, a pile fabric similar to velvet, is made of cotton, or blended
with rayon, and also feels great. Quality varies, but many can be
cleaned easily. Just be mindful that some selections have loops and
loose stitching in the design that can catch on belt buckles and pets’
claws.
Acrylics and olefins are durable, but don’t have the soft feel. Unless
they are a high quality they may pill, but they have selections that
hide dirt more readily, and are easy to clean.
Leather is a popular choice today because of its durability, and wide
ranges of colors and finishes. Usually pricier, the quality depends on
how the hide is processed. Good leather is tough and develops character
and suppleness as it ages. Use the specific leather products suggested
for cleaning and conditioning by each manufacturer.
In areas with less traffic, rayons, polyester blends and silk can add a
look of style and quality. A silk occasional chair can be the crown
jewel on a room, but it needs professional cleaning, and will fade and
deteriorate near a window. Imitation silk, made of polyester, is more
durable, has a similar look, and is less expensive.
One last caveat, we tire of large patterns quickly. The more neutral
choices can be decked out with fabulous pillows.
