SHIMMERING TABLE CENTERPIECE FOR THE
SEASON
Wouldn’t you love a dining or buffet table display that draws attention
and rave reviews? Most of you have the necessary components already, but
if not, they are easily available in Erie. It’s all about mirrors,
crystal, and light.
For years now I have adorned my dining room table with a centerpiece
that never fails to captivate me as well as my guests. After covering
the table with a Christmas green tablecloth and a taffeta runner, I
place a three piece mirrored table runner in the center, which measures
about 36” by 12”. Twelve-inch square mirrored tiles are available if you
can’t find the mirrored runner.
Mirrors not only protect the tablecloth, but also are a stable setting
for the additional props, and they are narrow enough not to interfere
with the dinnerware settings. We needn’t mention that the reflective
power of mirrors is the perfect stage-setter to wow our senses.
The remaining steps involve a joyful display of crystal wine glasses,
swarovski lotus blossoms, glass candlesticks and votives, a crystal bowl
full of ornaments, and possibly a small bud vase or two of fresh
flowers.
My Christmas colors are burgundy and pink, so I begin by placing a
crystal bowl full of small burgundy and pink ornaments of different
shapes, matte and shiny, some with designs and some plain. I intersperse
these with small-mirrored tile ornaments that resemble little disco
balls.
Around the bowl I place five glass and crystal candlesticks and add pink
tapers. I add candle rings that contain tiny pink and burgundy rose
buds. But I also disperse three faceted votives with tea lights to catch
the reflections both high and low.
In the remaining space I place two clear glass pine trees of different
heights, and a mix of crystal brandy snifters and wine glasses to
continue the height variation. The surprise is turning the glasses
upside down so they can be used as pedestals. On the circular bottom of
the glasses I place crystal lotus blossoms.
When these candles and votives are lit, you will see a fire and ice show
that is spellbinding. Nothing else is needed, but you can add a few
small vases holding a few fresh flowers.
The dazzle is really made by the faceted crystal that is set aglow by
the high and low candles, but you can substitute glass objects and still
be successful. With a little dusting you are set through New Year’s Eve
with little expense except candle replacement.
For those of you intimidated by floral arranging, this is truly a
stunning way to create a centerpiece that doesn’t require precise design
skills. Let your imaginations soar with this crystal, light, and mirror
premise, and I’m sure you will be delighted.
Please email me with ideas you come up with to add to this centerpiece
theme, or ask any questions about how to set it up. Please put “crystal
centerpiece” in the subject line. Happy holiday decorating.
